Heavy Seas Mutiny Fleet

Our 3rd release in the new Heavy Seas Mutiny Fleet on the horizon.  We loved the Big DIPA and our Prosit! and was glad that our fellow beer drinkers did too. Demand was so much greater than anticipated, we weren't even able to hang on to a few bottles for our library!

I've been asked how the Mutiny Fleet came to be and how we decide on which recipe to brew next. To begin, I believe in the creativity of our brewers, and if they are excited to try something new, than I want to see them have their chance. It helps us keep expecting the unexpected.

The new Mutiny Fleet began as a pet project of our brewers who created very small batch experiments to amuse the palates of folks who worked here at the brewery. It was quickly agreed that some of results were just too good to keep to ourselves. From the recipes to the label art, everything is a creative collaboration by our brewers.

This is how our first pumpkin beer, The Great Pumpkin - Imperial Pumpkin Ale came to be.

To be sure that we created the best possible recipe, small 5 gallon batches were made using different yeasts, spice blends and other ingredients.

Then the entire crew got together and held a taste test, discussing what was working and what could be improved. Recipes were assigned a number so ingredients were not known to the tasters.

Then we tested one more time just to be sure... Everyone cast a vote for their favorite recipe.

The results? The Great Pumpkin - Imperial Pumpkin Ale. The secret is in the 3 ounces of spice per barrel for this fall brew. We add the pumpkin during the mash at precisely the right time to create the perfect balance of malt, hops, pumpkin and spice.

To be truely extrAArghdinary you have to be willing to experiment, so we didn't stop there. A small amount of The Great Pumpkin was drawn aside and will be used in firkins for the upcoming Real Ale Fest and special events during Baltimore Beer Week. Visit our events page to stay informed!
